The Visit
He got the six minutes past a cold midnight,
from the city, to out where its dark at night
On the train, looking out the dirty window
at the city, so busy, so bathed in neon glow
He alighted at a deserted old train station
Finally he'd arrived at his lonely destination
A sigh released a plume of cold December air
And a sense of unease that he soon would be there
Past the old gasworks and along the main road
That led over the bridge where the clear waters flowed
Out of the town to where the faster roads were
Then cut through icy fields on his mission to find her
Grass crunched underfoot and sparkled in moonlight
The fields bathing in her rays was a glorious sight
The trees outlined the scene like a black twisted frame
From behind which a pale light in the far distance came
---
Nurse shut the door behind her, just after twelve
She lay quiet, then into her mind she did delve
A prison of cushions, and sheets of pure white
The side light gave just a brighter shade of night
He came to her in the darkest of night
She couldn't quite place him, but knew him alright
She couldn't see his eyes under his dark trilby hat
Just a man in the corner, who quietly sat
Time was blank, moments passed, fell away, into dream
She turned her head to face, but he was not to be seen
She called in the nurse and asked 'who was the man in here'
'The one in the trilby, did he just dissapear?'
The nurse checked the locks but no one could have got in
'I think your mistaken' she smiled mopping her brow and her chin
'Get some rest, you'll feel better in the morning, don't fear'
'And don't cry, those blue eyes, are too elegant for tears'
In the distance was a man, walking sparkly fields of December
With a pale light behind him, like a just glowing ember
And under that trilby so dark, from striking blue eyes
Came a tear, as he walked under cold moonlit skies
